There are a ton of ways to start building your client and customer list, and one of the best ways, in my opinion, is to give away things for free.

But there’s an art to free information, products and services. Not every product is fit to go for free. So, with that in mind, here are my favorite things to give my audience for free in my business:

Blog Posts

Blog posts are the bread and butter of the free things I give away. Most people don’t think of blog posts being “free” content but think about it. You spend hours developing quality content each month and then you publish it.

How much do people have to pay to read your blog post? Nothing. Sounds pretty free to me. In fact, in cases where people have well-crafted blogs, I’d say this is the pinnacle of any free product strategy that you’ll need.

Podcast Episodes

Another popular but not so obvious free thing that companies give away are podcast episodes. Now, not everyone has a podcast but for those that do there’s a lot of work that go into them.

These are not only a great way to connect with a larger audience, but they’re also perfect for demonstrating your credibility and knowledge. But that doesn’t mean you need to make yourself the centre of your podcast episode every time. Make sure the content you’re putting out provides value to your audience.

Perhaps my favorite free product is the eBook. I like them because not only can they help build your email list but they really can drive sales. A free eBook doesn’t have to be a complex document. It can be simple and short and still be effective.

I also like eBooks because one is typically enough. You don’t have to have a ton of them to make a big impact and you make one and it will help your business for a long time. Totally worth it.

Templates and/or Worksheets

The last free item that I like but tend not to use a lot are templates and worksheets. I don’t do a lot of things that I find they provide value with, but I know a bunch of entrepreneurs that have great success with them.

Templates and workbooks work similar to eBooks in how they function as a free product, but they do have the added benefit of being interactive which is great for getting potential clients involved and engaged.
